iCLEAN: The Energy Technology Incubator

Incubators for Collaborating & Leveraging Energy And Nanotechnology (iCLEAN)
The energy & technology acceleration network

About iCLEAN
The Energy and Environmental Technology Applications Center (E2TAC) at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE), along with the Hudson Valley Center for Innovation (HVCFI) have created a partnership called "Incubators for Collaborating & Leveraging Energy And Nanotechnology" (iCLEAN), funded in part through the New York State Energy Research Development Authority (NYSERDA).

The partnership will enhance and expand the offering of the incubators at E2TAC/CNSE and HVCFI while creating a new incubator at the Saratoga Technology + Energy Park (STEP). iCLEAN will serve clean energy technology start-ups throughout the "Tech Valley", a 19-county region that encompasses the Capital Region, parts of the North Country, Hudson Valley, and Mohawk Valley.

The primary collaborators, along with a cadre of secondary partners and affiliates, represent a carefully crafted partnership of highly qualified and experienced Tech Valley institutions that have banded together as a team to offer the region's entrepreneurs, scientists, innovators and inventors the highest levels of energy-focused incubation, including facilities, access to scientific research and development, academics, proven business commercialization and acceleration experience, manufacturing and training expertise, along with executive mentoring and education and outreach activities.

Each primary collaborator is committed to four overriding principals:

  1. Technology Development
  2. Education & Training
  3. Accelerating Commercialization
  4. Technology-Based Economic Development

Coinciding with these principals, the iCLEAN partners are dedicated to education, training, providing a testing environment for innovative alternative energy technologies as well as providing professional office, meeting and conference environments, light manufacturing and research facilities that will form the nucleus of a strong clean energy cluster within the Tech Valley. This cluster will have a dramatic positive economic impact throughout the entire region.

The ultimate goal is to aggregate the current forms of alternative energy being developed within the incubation/acceleration facilities, along with new emerging technologies developed from within the consortium's current and future client companies, to create a cohesive energy roadmap capable of producing significant sector workforce development, new innovations and intellectual properties, advanced education curriculums, community education and awareness that can be extended for statewide, nationwide and global applications.

Participating in iCLEAN
If your organization is interested in applying to participate in the iCLEAN program, your first step is to complete a detailed application.  Once your application has been reviewed, you may be asked to meet with the Board of Advisors.  If the Board of Advisors and the iCLEAN site director approve your application, you will be notified of your acceptance into the program and will work with the iCLEAN Director to organize the specifics regarding space, needs, services, and other logistical items.

iCLEAN focuses on start-up companies but will expand its offerings to other more mature organizations that require technology, market or business support in order to succeed. Typical organizations that are fostered through iCLEAN will include:

  • Early stage: Made up of students, faculty, or simply someone with a great idea; this type of business most commonly will receive on-site fostering and assistance in creating a business plan or demonstrating proof of feasibility of the product.
  • Formative: The company has an idea, a prototype, a business plan, and no revenue. iCLEAN will provide product testing and enhancement, access to tools, and market deployment strategy.
  • Established: The organizations in this category have a proven product but are looking for further growth in new markets. iCLEAN will assist them in exploring alternate product uses or untapped markets, review the company's overall strategy, and assist in marketing any new products or services.

Facilities and Services Offered Through iCLEAN
iCLEAN has three locations in New York State:

  1. Albany through the Energy & Environmental Technology Applications Center
  2. Hudson Valley through the Hudson Valley Center for Innovation
  3. Saratoga through the Saratoga Technology + Energy Park

iCLEAN has available office, small manufacturing and/or laboratory space at its locations (subject to availability) to provide traditional incubation-type services at reduced costs to viable businesses. Companies accepted as clients through the iCLEAN application and review process will, if needed, have access to phone, internet, fax and copier machines, meeting and conference room space, shared administrative/receptionist services, and auditoriums for larger presentations.  Standard lease arrangements will be negotiated with each participating client on an individual basis, depending on location.

If an incubator client wishes to utilize iCLEAN services at another location, they are within an easy driving distance to so.  By having three major locations throughout the Tech Valley, iCLEAN provides a business site nearby no matter where the business is located, while also managing to offer a full complement of expertise, tools, equipment, and space.
